Borthwick Castle

Borthwick Castle is an exclusive-use historic venue in the Midlothian countryside, around 12 miles south of Edinburgh. Its medieval setting, period architecture and refurbished interiors make it a distinctive choice for weddings and private celebrations, with the castle and its reception spaces available for guests to enjoy together.

The venue has three main reception rooms, each suited to a different part of an occasion. The Garrison can host ceremonies, drinks receptions, parties and dancing, while the Great Hall provides a setting for banquets, dining and celebrations. The State Room offers a more intimate lounge for guests to meet over drinks and canapés. The rooms combine historic character with modern comforts, including fireplaces and views across the surrounding countryside. The castle’s published capacity is up to 80 guests.

For weddings, Borthwick Castle offers exclusive use and flexibility to shape the celebration around the couple’s plans. The team can help create a day that ranges from a formal gathering to a more relaxed, intimate occasion. Food is prepared by the castle’s culinary team, with menus drawing on Scottish ingredients and traditions.

Accommodation is available across twelve individually designed bedrooms, with additional stays in the Gatehouse and Crookston Cottage. This allows wedding parties and private groups to make a longer stay of the occasion, rather than simply hiring a room for a few hours. With its reception spaces, dining and guest accommodation in one historic setting, Borthwick Castle is suited to weddings, private celebrations and exclusive group stays.
