Heirbrugmolen park

The park was designed in such a way that extensive mowing is possible: maintenance-friendly and good for biodiversity.

Part of the park offers space for Samentuin 't Bonenveld, where local and city residents with green fingers grow vegetables and fruit together on their own or shared plot and garden together with great pleasure. Visitors are very welcome when the gardeners are present.

In addition, the site has a number of infiltration facilities in the form of wadis. Wadde, a wadi? A wadi is a green ditch in an urban area. The word is the abbreviation of Water Afvoer Drainage en Infiltration. It stores rainwater and purifies it this. The rainwater from the hard surfaces can naturally infiltrate into the adjacent soil. This is good for flooding and exceptional drought. These wadis are not only beneficial for natural water supply, they look nice and are an extra fun element in the natural play area.

The Mill

More than a century ago, Lokeren was dotted with at least 35 mills. Of this rich mill heritage, only one example remains near the railway: the "Heirbrugmolen".

The Heirbrug mill is a stone corn windmill, mountain mill type.

Initially, there was a wooden post mill here, which was replaced by the current stone mountain mill in 1851-1852. It was restored in 2001-2002 and in 2015-2021.

When there is enough wind, the millers often let the mill turn. Normally, from April to October, they are also happy to give you a word of explanation, every second and fourth Sunday afternoon of the month, from 2 to 5 pm.
