Kursaal Oostende has been an iconic place since 1953 and known as an architectural pearl of architect Leon Stynen. Over the years the building was renovated and restored several times. The grandeur of yesteryear has been preserved all this time. But to bring the hall in line with the ambitions of Kursaal Oostende, a thorough renovation of the concert hall is necessary.
“Every year we receive more than 250,000 visitors in our beautiful hall. In the past, however, we regularly had to let interesting artists pass who only wanted to perform for a standing audience. When we discovered a modular room system, we immediately started working to see how we could integrate it into our existing infrastructure. It turned out to be a game changer for us, so we will be able to organize a concert for a seated audience one day and a rock concert for a standing audience the next. So we not only retain the comfort of today, but have a few additional assets.” - Peter Craeymeersch, director Kursaal Oostende.
More than 3,000 concertgoers
The biggest changes will be below the floor surface. New technologies will be installed there that will ensure that the hall has a multifunctional character. Thanks to mechanical lifts under the hall, the entire hall surface, including the stage, will be height adjustable, independently of each other. The red chairs will be able to disappear through the floor. This way, the entire hall can be adapted to suit the event in no time. This way, the hall can be brought to the same height as the stage - giving you a beautiful view of the beach and the sea - or vice versa.
This gives you a gigantic floor space of 1,700 square meters and a concert hall where more than 3,000 concertgoers will be able to enjoy a performance in a state of the art hall. Thanks to this high-tech gadget, Kursaal Oostende immediately achieved a Belgian scoop. It will be the largest room in Belgium that can change its layout in this way.

Because in the different configurations that we can apply, we will be able to organize not only large banquets in the current auditorium, but also trade fairs, and we will expand our capacity for conferences. The works in the concert hall will last two years, during which time only the auditorium will be closed. The other rooms of the Kursaal remain open for events during periods where the works permit.
Impact on Ostend
This renovation will not only have a huge impact on the Kursaal itself, it will also create a positive vibe for the city of Ostend. Thanks to this renovation, Kursaal Oostende wants to increase the annual number of visitors from 250,000 to 330,000 visitors.

About 60% of them go to a restaurant before or after the show and 30% also book an overnight stay in the area. Thanks to this new hall, the number of visitors per year will only increase. The impact on the catering industry will increase further with even more overnight stays and even more visitors who will eat or drink something locally before or after their performance or concert. It goes without saying that Kursaal Oostende is of cultural importance. It is one of the most iconic buildings in the city. A building that gave many people a wonderful time in the past. With this renovation, Kursaal Oostende not only wants to protect the historical heritage, but also prepares the hall for a bright future.
Backstage and Lounge Bar
At the same time as the concert hall, the backstage and the Lounge Bar are also being adapted. By making the backstage more comfortable and pleasant, Kursaal wants to be able to welcome artists even better today. There will be a large kitchen with a beautiful foyer space, where artists can enjoy hot meals, the dressing rooms will have a new and cozy design and the shower facilities will also be adapted.
“We have the ambition to market this Kursaal Oostende worldwide as a state-of-the-art concert and event hall. The historic character of this building will fully flourish in the seating arrangement of the concert hall. We continue this vision in the Lounge Bar, which is located on the west side of the room. This will be a brand new VIP area for 280 visitors where you can have a drink before or after the performance. In addition, the lounge can also be used as an additional conference room. Cost: 25 million euros
Of course, such drastic changes come at a cost. This amounts to 25 million euros and is paid by various institutions. The Flemish government subsidizes 9 million euros. There is a contribution of 400,000 euros thanks to the province of West Flanders and the West Flemish Intercommunal through the regional fund. Furthermore, 100,000 euros will be contributed through the tourist incentives regulations of the province of West Flanders. Bouwheer NV EKO will provide 4 million euros. The remaining 11.5 million euros will fund the operation itself.

Follow the works up close
The intention is to have everything ready by August 2026 so that the doors can open again in September 2026. During the works, Kursaal Oostende will communicate via its social media channels: TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. This way everyone can follow the renovation works up close. In addition, the Kursaal will also organize visiting moments so that everyone can admire the works live. How this will work in practice will be announced later.

Tijdens de werken blijven de andere zalen van Kursaal Oostende gewoon open.
Kursaal Oostende is sinds 1953 een iconische plek en bekend als architecturale parel van architect Leon Stynen. Door de jaren heen werd het gebouw verschillende keren gerenoveerd en gerestaureerd. De grandeur van weleer bleef al die tijd bewaard. Maar om de zaal in lijn te krijgen met de ambities die Kursaal Oostende heeft, is een grondige renovatie van de concertzaal nodig.
“Jaarlijks ontvangen we meer dan 250.000 bezoekers in onze prachtige zaal. In het verleden moesten we echter regelmatig interessante artiesten laten passeren die enkel voor een staand publiek wilden optreden. Toen we een moduleerbaar zaalsysteem ontdekten zijn we onmiddellijk aan de slag gegaan om te zien hoe we dit konden inpassen in onze bestaande infrastructuur. Het bleek voor ons gamechanger te zijn, zo zullen we de ene dag een concert kunnen organiseren voor een zittend publiek en de volgende dag een rockconcert voor een staand publiek. We behouden dus niet alleen het comfort van vandaag maar hebben er een paar bijkomende troeven bij.” - Peter Craeymeersch, directeur Kursaal Oostende.
Meer dan 3.000 concertgangers
De grootste veranderingen zullen zich onder het vloeroppervlak bevinden. Daar worden nieuwe technieken geïnstalleerd die ervoor zullen zorgen dat de zaal een multifunctioneel karakter krijgt. Dankzij mechanische liften onder de zaal, zal de hele zaaloppervlakte, inclusief het podium, in hoogte verstelbaar zijn, onafhankelijk van elkaar. De rode stoelen zullen via de vloer kunnen verdwijnen. Op die manier kan de hele zaal in een mum van tijd aangepast worden op maat van het evenement. Zo kan de zaal op gelijke hoogte gebracht worden van het podium – waardoor je een prachtig zicht hebt op het strand en de zee -, of omgekeerd.
Hierdoor krijg je een gigantische vloeroppervlakte van 1.700 vierkante meter en een concertzaal waar meer dan 3.000 concertgangers zullen kunnen genieten van een optreden in een state of the art zaal. Door dit hoogtechnologische snufje heeft Kursaal Oostende meteen een Belgische primeur beet. Het wordt de grootste zaal van België die op deze manier van indeling zal kunnen veranderen.

Want in de verschillende opstellingen die we kunnen toepassen zullen we in het huidige auditorium niet alleen grote banketten kunnen organiseren, maar ook beurzen, en breiden we onze capaciteit voor congressen uit. De werken in de concertzaal zullen twee jaar duren, gedurende die periode zal enkel het auditorium gesloten zijn. De andere zalen van het Kursaal blijven in de periodes waar de werken het toelaten open voor evenementen.
Impact op Oostende
Niet alleen voor het Kursaal zelf zal deze renovatie een enorme impact hebben, ook voor de stad Oostende zal dit voor een positieve vibe zorgen. Dankzij deze renovatie wil Kursaal Oostende het jaarlijks aantal bezoekers van 250.000 opkrikken naar 330.000 bezoekers.
“Kursaal is een economische motor van onze stad en trekt jaarlijks zo'n 250.000 bezoekers aan. Daarvan gaat zo'n 60% voor of na de show op restaurant en 30% boekt ook een overnachting in de buurt. Dankzij deze nieuwe zaal, zal het aantal bezoekers per jaar alleen maar stijgen. De impact voor de horeca zal verder verhogen met nog meer overnachtingen en nog meer bezoekers die voor of na hun voorstelling of concert lokaal iets zullen eten of drinken. Bovendien kunnen we met de staande concerten ook een jonger publiek aantrekken, wat onze ambitie als hedendaagse cultuurstad onderstreept." - Bart Tommelein, Burgemeester Stad Oostende en voorzitter Kursaal Oostende.
Dat Kursaal Oostende van cultureel belang is, spreekt voor zich. Het is één van de meest beeldbepalende gebouwen van de stad. Een gebouw dat in het verleden veel mensen een prachtige tijd bezorgde. Met deze renovatie wil Kursaal Oostende niet alleen het historische erfgoed beschermen, maar wordt de zaal ook opnieuw klaar gemaakt voor een mooie toekomst.
Backstage en Lounge Bar
Tegelijk met de concertzaal worden ook de backstage en de Lounge Bar aangepast. Door de backstage comfortabeler en aangenamer te maken, wil het Kursaal artiesten vandaag nog beter kunnen verwelkomen. Er komt een grote keuken met een mooie foyer ruimte, waar artiesten kunnen genieten van warme maaltijden, de kleedkamers krijgen een nieuwe en gezellige inrichting en ook de douchemogelijkheden worden aangepast.
“We hebben de ambitie om dit Kursaal Oostende wereldwijd in de markt te zetten als state of the art concert- en evenementenhal. In de zaalopstelling van de concertzaal zal het historische karakter van dit gebouw ten volle floreren. Die visie trekken we door in de Lounge Bar die zich aan de westkant van de zaal bevindt. Dat wordt een gloednieuwe VIP-ruimte voor 280 bezoekers waar voor of na de voorstelling iets gedronken kan worden. Daarnaast zal de lounge ook gebruikt kunnen worden als een extra conferentiezaal. Kostprijs: 25 miljoen euro
Dergelijke ingrijpende veranderingen komen natuurlijk met een kostprijs. Die bedraagt 25 miljoen euro en wordt betaald door verschillende instanties. De Vlaamse regering subsidieert 9 miljoen euro. Er is een bijdrage van 400.000 euro dankzij de provincie West-Vlaanderen en de West-Vlaamse Intercommunale via het regiofonds. Verder wordt er 100.000 euro bijgedragen via het reglement toeristische impulsen van de provincie West-Vlaanderen. Bouwheer NV EKO zal 4 miljoen euro voorzien.
